Modern Melodies in China

After the boom years
the money in the bank
is top heavy, propped
on the frail oblivion
of man
and nature failing.

And things in their course
get too hot or too cold
...swirling in hurricane disease
above the lukewarm center.

Therefore sitting
in a restaurant in Shanghai
before things get too bad
there is a feeling of unease
in all of us here

and we no longer enjoy
these modern melodies
...these tapestries of bright new color
which for a few years
seemed so brilliant
and so new.
