when the boys come home

the girls working
in the flag factory
widows-to-be
out pouring
all their semaphore poetry

wait for their boys
with well rehearsed folds
they’ve seen it many times
on prime time news broadcasts

pulsing hearts
pulsing he
pulse
half mast
