Caparison

Come, bustle, bustle; caparison my horse — Shakespeare, Richard III, Act 5, Scene 3

NOTE: Apologies to those who might have tried buying Waters of the Night by Howard Mingham and who were mistakenly asked to pay 2.99 p&p in addition to the 2.99 payment for the e-book: this was a formatting mistake we made via paypal: of course there is no p&p with an electronic book! This has now been rectified, so please try again.

Welcome tothe Recusant's new e-book imprint, Caparison. The choice of name is intended to convey variety of subject and style; poetry which demonstrates a love of language in combination with a strength of subject; poetry which is unconstrained by fashionable trappings, taking its own individual course; the kind of non-conformist poetry of the new Recusant School: the wide diversity of writing styles and subjects that our webzine has promoted since its inception, partly in response to what many poets today perceive as an increasingly prosaic mainstream. As ever, subjects and themes which lurch to the Left end of the spectrum are particularly welcome.

Caparison will operate intially on a commission basis. Submissions of collections between 30 and 50 poems will be considered but with the caveat that, since a list of titles are already in the pipeline, publication for any other potential authors will be unlikely to materialise until 2011. Poets already commissioned to appear in the near future under the Caparison imprint include Sally Richards and David Kessel. Caparison will also operate on a nominal 'commercial' basis, with full downloads to be charged at a minimal price of £2.99 per title. This is necessitated in part due to the considerable labour time spent on producing what will essentially be electronic books laid out in pdf (pre-print and printable) format, replete with distinctive cover designs.

You can download a sample from the e-books by double-clicking on the cover images. Should the sample poems whet your appetites, you can then purchase the full e-books via Paypal by double-clicking on a Buy link under it. Once your payment is received, you will receive the e-book as an emailed pdf file.

Peter Branson

Red Shift, 60pp

Introduction by Alan Morrison

The poetry of Peter Branson is an accomplished combination of tone, style and subject one might not normally presume to go together: economy and flourish, restraint and passion, private-mindedness and social conscience. Branson manages to blend these variants into a handsome harmony, making for a poetry both emotionally and intellectually affecting. These poems ruminate on the many-coloured conflicts of today: from the clashes of the banking crisis to the scrub of Afghanistan.

Howard Mingham (1952-1984)

Waters of the Night, 60pp

Contributions from David Kessel and Ken Worpole

Introduction by Alan Morrison

A Caparison posthumous production: the first and only full collection of the work of a truly gifted and original poet. All proceeds to go towards an eventual limited print run of pamphlets. All those who order this ebook will automatically qualify for a free copy of the pamphlet once it is produced.

What strikes one on first reading Mingham is his almost sage-like coining of original aphorism, his aslant descriptions, his clipped yet bristling tropes, his almost apocalyptic tone. ... 'If I Am But My Body' ... is surely one of the greatest contenders for a future anthology of fugitive masterpieces that has come to light in arguably decades.
